Cocoon symbolizes protection, metamorphosis and rebirth. When it was first installed in the summer of 2018, a maple tree served as its supportive home. During the winter, the sturdy Cocoon settled onto the ground where it quietly hibernated on the soil in a curved posture. The moist hay and soil mixture, added in summer 2019, acts as a sheet over the Cocoon, whose body is made with zebra grass and giant silver grass. As the cycle continues and Cocoon decomposes, it will change from light khaki to spotted to dark brown, finally becoming soil. Next spring, new plants will grow from the old, with Cocoon’s nutrients offering strength and sustenance.
